TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – This week on Run for Fun, we chat with Nels Matson. The ultramarathon runner from Bradenton, FL is setting off on a record-breaking run across the country. His plan is to run 3000+ miles from sea to shining sea across America, and his goal is to do it in less than 42 days.

Leigh Spann and Coach Maria ask him about the logistics of the run. What is the current record he’s trying to break? Where will the run begin and end? Does he have specific cities where he plans to stop along the way? Matson starts his journey on September 8, 2024 with a goal of running at least 72 miles a day. Matson explains how he trained for this monumental task.

Matson takes on this challenge as part of “ Project Campbell’s Call .” Navy SEAL Chris Campbell was killed by Taliban forces on August 6, 2011. In his will, he wanted 100,000 people to take action to help the Wounded Warrior Project. That goal was met earlier in 2024. Matson dedicated his run and the funds he raises to the Wounded Warrior Project to continue the Call to Action started by Campbell.

Matson also discusses the congenital heart defect he had to overcome to become a long-distance runner and his background as a wrestler.

Many runners, like Matson, use their passion to raise awareness and money for causes. For more ways to keep running an enjoyable part of your life, be sure to watch or listen to previous episodes of Run for Fun.
