TAMPA, Fla., (WFLA) – Tampa City Council is approving more resources for police to keep Ybor City safe.

This comes amid the department’s efforts to stop violence in the area almost a year after a deadly mass shooting.

It’s no secret Ybor City is a popular spot for nightlife and Tampa Police Department is trying to meet the need by providing more officers and security.

Since the October 29 shooting last year where 16 people were shot and two were killed, Tampa Police have made improvements to security.

“Our safety and security plan is always under constant review looking for best practices and what is going to work, depending on the environment in Ybor City. After the 29th tragedy that took place, we continue to look for best practices and ways to enhance the safety and security of that area,” said Major Eric DeFelice.

Major Eric DeFelice spoke to council about the number of security cameras, increased number of off-duty patrols, and medics on bikes to get to people.

“We discussed the need for partners, so what we did was looked at our available resources and we partnered with other city entities to include Tampa Fire Rescue. We now have bike medics that are a staple on Friday and Saturday nights,” Major DeFelice said.

Police said these medics are able to cut through traffic and handle medical calls more efficiently.

With more funding, the police are hoping to add things like noise detection equipment.

Those behind the badge said they rely on their partners to help ensure everyone has a safe night out.

“We also utilize the fire marshal and that is key in occupancy for some of the clubs and establishments that may be going over and causing a problem to the overall blight in the area,” Major DeFelice said.

With all the busy lines and crowded streets, Ybor City always has an active patrol.

“That increased presence, when people see that, not just along 7th avenue, but the surrounding area deters people from coming into that district wanting to do bad things,” Major DeFelice said.

TPD asked for more funding from the Community Redevelopment Agency to help carry this out.

Council agreed and the next step is for city council to send the plan to the CRA to see if more funding is needed.

Currently, TPD gets $250,000 for their Community Policing Plan.

Talk is cheap. Security is not. Time to make businesses pay for extra security. Is Ybor a SPECIAL TAXING DISTRICT? Raise those taxes. Citizens should not have to pay for businesses to make profits.
