AMBOY, Wash. (WFLA) — A missing 7-year-old girl who got lost in the wilderness in Washington overnight was carried to safety by deputies last month.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the child was staying at her grandparent’s campsite at Lake Merwin Campers Hideaway on Aug. 11 when she wandered away.

The video shows officials rescuing the girl, Shelby, the following morning after a fisherman heard her crying out for help, after she got stuck on a steep hillside, and called 911.

“Search crews had to navigate steep, muddy terrain covered in thick vegetation and sharp rocks,” the sheriff’s office said. “They climbed up the hillside on their hands and knees, grabbing onto fallen trees and roots to stabilize themselves”. Searchers safely brought Shelby down and took her by boat to be reunited with her family.”

Shelby was safely brought down, put on the deputy’s boat, and given a jacket.

Deputies commended Shelby’s bravery for spending the night alone in the woods and applauded their own for their outstanding rescue efforts.

“I would like to thank the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue for searching all night for Shelby,” her mother said. “I also want to thank the fisherman for calling 911 when he saw her.”

In an update on Thursday, officials said Shelby just began the 2nd grade and is loving school. “We are so proud of you!”
