    9/11 remembrance events happening in Tampa Bay 2024

    TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Events are being held throughout the Tampa Bay area to remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks that happened 23 years ago.

    Gatherings are taking place throughout the week to pay tribute to those lost in the attacks, both in the buildings and those who were in the line of duty.

    WFLA compiled a list of events in the area starting Saturday, Sept. 9 through Monday, Sept. 11.

    TAMPA POLICE & TAMPA FIRE RESCUE JOINT 9/11 MEMORIAL CEREMONY

    The Tampa Police Department and Tampa Fire Rescue are holding a joint memorial ceremony for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

    In honor of Patriot Day, first responders, veterans, and civic leaders invite the public to attend the ceremony, which features a traditional fire service ringing of the bell, a solemn escort of the beam (salvaged from the Twin Towers), and a chance to meet with first responders, military members, and veterans.

    The keynote speaker will be JoAnne Rice, director of the State of Florida’s Fire Marshal’s Office.

    PATRIOT DAY: 9/11 REMEMBRANCE EVENT

    Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Consumer & Veteran Services, and the Veterans Council of Hillsborough County invite the community to their annual Patriot Day: 9/11 Remembrance event.

    The event is free and open to the public.

    • When : Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m.
    • Where : Veterans Memorial Park & Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins, Jr. Museum, 3602 U.S. Highway 301 N., Tampa

    PALM HARBOR 9/11 CEREMONY AT CURLEW HILLS

    A 9/11 ceremony will be held at the Curlew Hills Memory Garden.

    The keynote speaker for this event will be Dan Nigro, who became the FDNY Chief after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

    His work with the FDNY included rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center and rebuilding the fire department after it lost 343 of its members.

    After he retired from the fire department, he became a New York Fire Commissioner.

    TAMPA BAY ROWDIES 9/11 STAIR CLIMB

    The Tampa Bay Rowdies will hold their 4th annual 9/11 Stair Climb at Al Lang Stadium.

    First responders, active military, and veterans were invited to climb 2,200 stairs in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Over 200 people are expected to attend.

    Check-in will be at 8 a.m. with the opening ceremony scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Lunch will also be served in between sessions.

    USF 9/11 MEMORIAL CEREMONY

    USF is holding a memorial ceremony on the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 at its Sarasota-Manatee campus.

    The featured speaker for the event is  John “Jack” McDonnell, a retired FDNY battalion chief who helped search for survivors in the wreckage of the collapsed World Trade Center.

    ANNUAL 9/11 CEREMONY AND INAUGURAL PHOENIX AWARDS

    The Warehouse Arts District Association invites the public to honor those who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

    The event will feature speeches from community leaders, a performance of the National Anthem, an invocation, and presentations by Admiral Farragut Academy students.

    In addition to commemorating 9/11, the association is also introducing the inaugural Phoenix Awards, celebrating individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and selflessness in service to the community.

    The event is open and free to the public.

    VENICE 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

    A 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony is being held in Venice, Florida.

    The event will include first responders, speeches, tributes, Venice Police and Fire Rescue’s presentation of the colors, a proclamation presented by Mayor Nick Pachota, Venice Fire Rescue bell ringing for those lost, and more.

    Franklin Boys Preparatory 9/11 Memorial

    The students at Franklin Boys Preparatory Academy in Tampa are creating a memorial for the 343 firefighters who were killed while responding to the 9/11 attacks in NYC.

    They will be joined by the Tampa Fire Department, who will have firefighters present to talk to the students.

    WINTER HAVEN 9/11 REMEMBRANCE DAY

    The city of Winter Haven, the Polk County Veteran’s Council, and local first responders will hold a memorial event for the city’s Sept. 11 Remembrance Day.

    Following the walk, the city will hold a candlelight vigil with speakers including Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd and Winter Haven Police Chief David Brannan.

    NEW PORT RICHEY 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

    The city of New Port Richey is hosting its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony.

    The 23rd annual event will feature guest speaker Jonathan Russell, the nephew of Deputy Commissioner William M. Feehan who was the highest-ranking New York Firefighter killed during the 9/11 terror attacks.

    Those who come early will also see 9/11 memorabilia and military vehicles on display as well as artwork from local students who share their view of this historical event.

    • Where : Sims Park, Grand Boulevard and Bank Street, New Port Richey

    ST. PETERSBURG FIRE RESCUE TO HONOR FALLEN HEROES OF 9/11

    The St. Petersburg Fire Rescue will honor those who lost their lives in the September 11 terror attacks with a moment of silence.

    At 9:57 a.m., department personnel at 13 stations across the city will park vehicles outside the stations and activate their emergency lights, with a moment of silence to be observed at 9:59 a.m., the exact time the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.

    “On this day, we remember and honor the lives lost, the courage of first responders, and the resilience of the American people,” said Interim Fire Chief Keith Watts. “Let us remember the victims of September 11th and honor their memory by striving for peace, unity, and understanding.”

    CLEARWATER FIRE & RESCUE REMEMBERS 9/11

    Clearwater Fire & Rescue will also remember those lost during the 9/11 attacks with a moment of silence.

    At 9:45 a.m., firefighters at every station across the city will gather ahead of a moment of silence to be observed at 9:59 a.m.

    The following stations will participate in the moment of silence:

    • Station 44, 950 Gulf Blvd.
    • Station 45, 1140 Court St.
    • Station 47, 1460 Lakeview Road
    • Station 48, 1700 N. Belcher Road
    • Station 49, 565 Sky Harbor Drive
    • Station 50, 2681 Countryside Blvd.
    • Station 51, 1720 Overbrook Ave.

    Fire Chief Scott Ehlers and other city officials will attend the remembrance at the city’s newest fire station, Station 46, at 546 Mandalay Ave. on Clearwater Beach.
