TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Several “amazing and selfless” bystanders are being hailed as heroes after they helped rescue a driver from his sinking truck after he crashed into a body of water in Florida on Saturday.

Deputies rushed into action after receiving multiple 911 calls after a vehicle hit the center median on the Pineda Causeway and then crashed through the guardrail and landed in the water, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said.

When deputies arrived, they found the selfless citizens, Ariana Ebert and Don Cobb, “holding the driver’s head above water, partially out of the vehicle, but the driver was trapped on something inside the car, preventing them from being able to pull him out.”

The sheriff’s office said the two “did what they could to keep his head above the water” until first responders arrived.

With the help of several deputies, the driver was eventually pulled from the sinking truck, and officials began CPR on him.

The driver was taken to the hospital where he remains in ICU, the sheriff’s office said.

“There are not enough words on days like today that explain the immense emotions one feels about just how great this community is!! Our Deputies are trained to jump into action in emergency situations, and we would never ask citizens to put their own lives at risk, but to see them selflessly try to save someone in a truly scary situation, shows the kind of people that make up Brevard County!!” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a Facebook post .
