TAMPA, Fla. (BLOOM) — Coin enthusiasts and collectors alike will be in for a rare treat at the Great American Coin and Collectibles Show this September, as one of the most famous coins in U.S. history—a 1913 Liberty Head nickel valued at $6.25 million—will be on display for the first time in Tampa. The inaugural event promises to dazzle visitors with more than $100 million in rare coins and currency at the Tampa Convention Center from September 11-14, 2024.

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of only five known to exist, is the crown jewel of the exhibit, with two of its counterparts residing in prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian. “This is the finest example of the five, and it’s an honor to have it displayed in Tampa for the first time,” said Larry Shepherd, manager of the Great American Coin and Collectibles Show.

In addition to the coveted nickel, visitors will get the chance to view a mismade 1943 Lincoln penny, insured for $360,000. This penny is part of a small batch accidentally struck using copper, rather than the zinc-coated steel required during World War II. “It’s worth a pretty penny today,” Shepherd added with a smile.

The four-day event, open to the public, will feature hundreds of dealers from around the country buying and selling rare coins, stamps, paper money, and precious metals. Attendees can even bring in their own collectibles for complimentary, informal evaluations from top experts like Jeff Garrett, a renowned numismatist and editor of the Guide Book of United States Coins .

The U.S. Mint will also be showcasing its latest product line, while Bill the Buffalo, the Mint’s beloved mascot, will be there to entertain and educate young collectors.

The show kicks off on September 11, with media availability for the 1913 Liberty Head nickel from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on opening day. Admission is $15 from Wednesday through Friday, and free for all on Saturday. For those curious about what treasures might be hidden in their own piggy banks, this is a must-see event.
