TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The University of Tampa will now go by another nickname, in an effort to increase the university’s reputation.

Instead of calling itself “UT,” the official nickname is now “UTampa.”

The president of the university said one of her priorities is to strengthen their reputation “as a model of higher education,” in order to become a household name.

“There are numerous other UTs in the higher education space, including the universities of Texas, Tennessee, Toledo, Toronto and Tulsa,” President Teresa Abi-NAder Dahlberg said. “Since its founding, the University has been closely linked to the city of Tampa, and by calling ourselves UTampa, we can strengthen that association, eliminate confusion and assert our pride in our University and our city.”

Along with the name change, the university also added three new logos to enhance their traditional UT logo.

As the city of Tampa continues to grow, the University of Tampa hopes its downtown location can increase its national awareness.
