BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A couple is behind bars after they left a 2-year-old boy in a hot car while shopping, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

Around 4:10 p.m. on Sunday, deputies responded to a Walmart on 53rd Avenue East to find an unconscious child in the back seat of a locked vehicle.

The child was reportedly red in the face and in possible distress.

First responders broke the window and recovered the unresponsive child who appeared to be overheated.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene, the child was taken to a fire truck where he woke up and showed signs of responsiveness before being transported to a local hospital.

Surveillance footage showed the child was left in the car for around 30 minutes, deputies said.

The boy’s mother, 36-year-old Astrid Garcia Rojas, and stepfather, 37-year-old Yuannel Montes Rojas, were arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse.

The child was expected to be ok.
