TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa City officials said storm surge is a major concern as some areas could see very high water levels because of Helene.

“We always say hide from the wind run from the water,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said.

On Tuesday, a storm surge warning was issued for the Tampa Bay area.

City leaders are urging people in low-lying and coastal areas to be prepared.

“Remember when the weather becomes severe, it will be very hard for emergency services to come out and respond,” Tampa Fire Rescue Fire Chief Barbara Tripp said.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking,” said Nancy Bowman, who lives on Davis Islands.

Our Max Defender 8 meteorologists are forecasting storm surge could reach 5 to 8 feet.

“If the track is a few miles east, we could see up to eight and even 10 feet for the storm surge. If it stays to the west, it might be slightly less, but either way, low lying areas and the coastal regions are going to see storm surge,” Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Eric Stone said.

Residents on Davis Islands said they’re ready to leave for higher ground if needed.

“If it’s as high as they say it’s going to be, I’m in a little house, I’m not up on the stilts, so it could cover my house,” said Bowman.

Castor is urging residents to take any potential evacuation orders seriously.

“Our police department has high water rescue vehicles, but we don’t want to use those to get someone who should’ve evacuated when they were given that order. Especially for newcomers, you have to understand anytime you battle mother nature, mother nature wins,” said Mayor Castor.
