TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Officials on Treasure Island got their first look at the aftermath of Hurricane Helene on Friday morning.

Access to Pinellas County barrier islands is blocked until further notice and there is no word on when residents will be able to return.

Videos and photos posted to the Treasure County government social media accounts show crews clearing the roads of sand and debris left over from Helene’s storm surge.

Search and rescue teams made their way onto the island early Friday morning.

Crews from Broward County and Oklahoma are working with their teams, officials said.

Treasure Island Mayor Tyler Payne issued the following statement:

Good morning Treasure Island. As the sun comes up, we are going to be seeing unbelievable damage and devastation to our community. Please continue to stay safe if possible. City crews will be on the island as soon as possible to start assessment and cleanup. Search and rescue teams are already making their way on to the island. If you need emergency assistance, please call 911. My heart is broken for our community, but we will make it through this together.
