ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — St. Petersburg Mayor, Kenneth T. Welch gives updates on the damages assessed due to Hurricane Helene.

The City of St. Petersburg has begun its recovery process by deploying teams to inspect damages and see repair damages.

A total of 70 residents have been rescued, and 750 residents are currently at a shelter in St. Petersburg, according to Welch.

St. Petersburg turned off the power at the Northeast Sewer Treatment Plant to protect the sewer plant.

To resume as normal for the power plant will take 48 hours, according to Welch.

Residents are asked not to drain water because it may flush, but it could cause sewage problems.
