TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — For the first time, three hurricanes are simultaneously active in the Atlantic Basin in October, according to the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA).

Satellite Imagery shared by CIRA at Colorado State University shows the trio — Hurricane Milton, Hurricane Kirk, and Hurricane Leslie — as they continue to develop in the Atlantic Basin on Sunday.

“For the first time in recorded history, the Atlantic basin has three active hurricanes in October or later,” CIRA said, crediting a CSU researcher for the statistic.

Milton became a Category 1 hurricane in the Gulf Coast on Sunday and is expected to strengthen before hitting Florida in the coming days.

Hurricane Kirk is expected to generate surf swells around the Leeward Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the east coast of the US, while Leslie is not expected to impact land, according to NOAA .
