TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 8, 2024) — As Hurricane Milton approaches the Gulf Coast, the American Lung Association has released critical health guidance for residents, particularly those living with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer.

Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 5 storm, is expected to make landfall Wednesday night, bringing storm surges of up to 12 feet. With many Gulf Coast communities still recovering from Hurricane Helene’s devastation just two weeks ago, authorities are urging residents to heed evacuation orders and follow safety precautions.

The Lung Association’s guidance is especially vital for the nearly half a million Tampa Bay residents managing lung conditions. The organization recommends preparing for potential evacuation or power outages by creating an Asthma or COPD Travel Pack that includes essential medications, delivery devices, insurance information, and other necessities.

Residents using supplemental oxygen should ensure they have a backup tank and power source. The Lung Association also advises contacting power companies and emergency responders to notify them of any medical devices reliant on electricity.

Floodwaters, often contaminated with sewage and chemicals, can exacerbate breathing problems. The Lung Association urges individuals to monitor their symptoms closely and seek medical attention if experiencing severe respiratory issues.

Residents are reminded never to use gasoline- or diesel-powered generators indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

For those seeking advice, the American Lung Association’s free Lung Helpline is available at 1-800-LUNGUSA, staffed by nurses and respiratory therapists.
