TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Officials are working around the clock to collect debris around the bay area.

On Wednesday, ahead of Hurricane Milton, crews were busy dropping off debris at a makeshift landfill that has been set up at the MidFlorida Amphitheatre.

County officials told News Channel 8 that the debris is coming from Pinellas County due to issues at the landfill in the county.

Tampa Bay area communities have been inundated with debris since Hurricane Helene.

The big concern is that potential hurricane-force winds could turn debris into projectiles and cause major damage.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced over the weekend that debris operations will be 24/7 until it’s no longer safe.

“Those debris missions need to be round the clock. You are going to save, I mean potentially save lives because this debris can fly and hit people. But certainly, you are going to have less damage,” DeSantis said.

In Hillsborough County, four sites will remain open for residents to drop off yard waste and debris from 7 a.m. to noon Wednesday ahead of hurricane Milton’s expected landfall.

Northwest County Solid Waste Facility, 8001 W. Linebaugh Ave., Tampa, FL 33625

South County Solid Waste Facility, 13000 U.S. 41, Gibsonton, FL 33534

Hillsborough Heights Debris Site, 6209 County Road 579, Seffner, FL 33584

Resource Recovery Facility Debris Site, 350 N. Falkenburg Road, Tampa, FL 33619. This facility remained open all night Tuesday and will close at noon on Wednesday.
