ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key on Wednesday night bringing high winds, heavy rain, and damages to the Tampa Bay area.
DeSantis spoke in St. Petersburg on Friday about the damages in the area.
During the Hurricane, a crane on top of a building in St. Petersburg collapsed due to high winds, and part of the roof on Tropicana Field was torn off.
When asked about state regulations for tower cranes during a hurricane, DeSantis stated he hopes he won’t have to make a state mandate for tower cranes because construction sites should have a contingency plan in place.
“Well I think the question is should there be more regulations, or should there just be more common sense,” DeSantis said.
According to Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie, disasters are at a local level where local officials have a plan in place.
“We need construction workers to have a plan and you have to have those contingencies. It is not like this snuck up from anywhere. We had a strong seven to ten days notice that things were heading in this direction,” Guthrie said.
