    Scrap metal recycling building catches fire: Clearwater Fire and Rescue

    CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A fire broke out at a scrap metal recycling business, Clearwater Fire and Rescue Department is currently on the scene.

    The building is located at 2032 Gentry Street.

    Officials said the fire started shortly after noon Friday and is expected to continue for “a long time.”

    The fire is believed to have started by appliance debris from recent hurricanes.

    Residents are reminded to properly dispose of hazardous materials at a Pinellas County Solid Waste facility. Drop off is free at these two locations:

    • Household Hazardous Waste Center
      • Drop off from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • Tuesdays to Fridays and first and third Saturdays of each month
      • 2855 109th Avenue North, St. Petersburg
      • Large lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of by a private company
    • Household Chemical Collection Events
      • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Nov. 23, and Dec. 14
      • 29582 U.S. 19 North, Clearwater
