VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Milton left its mark on the City of Venice.

The storm brought powerful winds and storm surge to the area, leaving behind a mess along the coast.

The south jetty was damaged by Hurricane Helene two weeks ago, but Hurricane Milton annihilated the area. Police now have Humphris Park barricaded and closed to the public.

“We talked after Helene about how for this specific area, to us, it was a catastrophic impact, and now it just compounded with Hurricane Milton,” Capt. Andy Leisenring said.

The Venice Fishing Pier was also significantly damaged. It remains closed to the public.

Along Venice Beach, some properties were partially buried in sand brought in with the storm surge. The landscape of the beach changed significantly as a result of the storm.

Police tell News Channel 8, the city had no reports of serious injuries or deaths as a result of Hurricane Helene.

People who evacuated started returning to the area. Many, devastated by the destruction along the shoreline.

“It is so sad. So sad,” Venice resident Sue Keena said. “It is so sad for all the people that don’t have a place to go back to. For a lot of people, it is a second home, but for us that live here, that is where it hurts.”

As crews work to clean the area of sand and debris, authorities are asking for you to avoid those hard-hit areas for safety reasons.

“Supply Points of Distribution are set up at four locations to provide water, food and tarps for those impacted by Hurricane Milton. These sites are open 2-7 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 11, and will operate 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for several days as recovery efforts continue,” said city officials in a news release.

    Locations:

    • Venice Community Center, 326 Nokomis Ave., Venice
    • San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port
    • Englewood Sports Complex, 1300 S. River Road, Englewood
    • Glebe Park, 1000 Glebe Lane, Sarasota

Neighborhood Points of Distribution are organized by Sarasota County and operated by the National Guard.

Their second home… ok - meanwhile when this horrific hurricane was happening they were sitting in their “primary” home “up north” drinking wine and eating popcorn and enjoying the show…and texting the year round resident neighbors of theirs asking how their properties were fairing… like we care - please just stay “up north” and don’t come down and DECIMATE what little resources we have right now!!! We DO NOT NEED YOU! Truth - we survive after you leave and we ENJOY it and CELEBRATE after YOU leave!!!
