Animal welfare group on standby after Hurricane Milton

( NewsNation ) — An animal welfare group is on standby in Florida with supplies for animals in search of food and shelter after Hurricane Milton .

The Category 3 hurricane made landfall Wednesday and tore through Florida communities. Although some emergency shelters accept pets, many don’t, meaning some animals couldn’t safely evacuate the storm’s path.

“Those are our companion animals in homes, but think about the animals not in our homes,” American Humane President and CEO Robin Ganzert said. “Outdoor kitties, for example, are next to impossible to find in the hours preceding a storm.”

The nonprofit will work to reunite indoor and outdoor animals with their caregivers, she said.

American Human’s aid after Hurricane Helene included visits to 39 communities and donations of 1,350 pounds of dog food, 840 pounds of dry cat food and 80 cans of wet cat food.
