TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Passengers on cruise ships during Hurricane Milton are taking to social media to share a strange occurrence they experienced at sea: birds falling from the sky onto the ships’ deck.

According to Cruiseradio.net , at least two ships experienced this phenomenon — Carnival Valor and Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas — from Oct. 8 to 9 off the coast of Tampa.

One user wrote in their video , “We are stuck on a cruise that ported out of Tampa and suddenly thousands of birds and moths started flying erratically in the middle of the sea and started falling out of the sky and they had to close all the open decks.”

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald wrote on Facebook, saying birds caught in storms mid-migration have been known to crash into a ship’s deck.

Heald noted dead birds that fall onto ships are collected and disposed of following United States Public Health protocols.
