SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Contractors began picking up storm debris in Sarasota on Wednesday.

County officials shared guidelines for residents handling debris in a social media post.

Officials said storm debris should not be put into plastic bags.

Debris should be separated into four piles:

    • Construction debris – fencing, carpeting, dry wall and other flood-impacted construction materials
    • White goods – appliances including refrigerators, ranges, washing machines, dryers, air conditioning units and water heaters
    • Bulk items – furniture and accessories, mattresses and other items affected by flood water within a home or structure
    • Vegetative debris – downed tree branches, limbs and vegetative material including regular yard waste

Residents should keep debris piles six feet away from things like trees, mailboxes, utility boxes so as not to hinder the collection process. Debris piles must not block the street or sidewalk.

Anyone with questions is asked to call (833) 937-7739.
