(WFRV) – Days before the high school football season opener, Green Bay Preble hosted Manitowoc Lincoln for a scrimmage on Friday in an FRCC North & South battle.

Both teams are led by first-year head coaches in the program with Brad Boockmeier leading the Hornets and former Packers’ offensive lineman Evan Smith at Manitowoc.

“A lot of kids showing up and putting in a ton of work all the way through the offseason”, Smith expressed. “It’s just fun. You get to see all their work come together now. I’ve been hard on the kids to get to what I want and they’ve responded extremely well.”

“The work they put in the summer, the energy, and the aurora was just different. They’re so ready for their scrimmage and to get in the game week. They’re ready to go”, Boockmeier said Friday afternoon.

Preble has posted just three wins in as many years, but the Hornets are hopeful they can turn their program around under new leadership.

“We definitely have a lot more intensity. We have a chip on our shoulder. We’re seniors now, so we’re picking it up”, Preble senior Omar Sanchez-Juarez told Local 5.

“Just the chemistry, man. We’re all brothers and we’re ready to go and we have each other’s backs”, Hornets’ senior Braylon Schadt said.

Coming off a 3-6 season, the Ships are hoping new head coach Evan Smith’s NFL knowledge will lead to the program’s first playoff win in over a decade.

“I’m very amped because we all have that energy and every day we give it our all. We’re out there just to work and do what we have to do, you know?”, Manitowoc Lincoln senior Julien Bailey expressed.

Green Bay Preble will kick their season off on Friday, August 23 (7:00 p.m.) at home against Oshkosh West. Manitowoc Lincoln will host De Pere on Thursday, August 22 (7:00 p.m.).
