    E-ZPass ‘smishing’ scam fooling victims into paying false tolls, VDOT says

    ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) – VDOT is warning Virginia residents of a text message that fools victims into making payments on unpaid tolls that don’t actually exist.

    Also known as ‘ smishing ,’ these text messages appear to be from E-ZPass Virginia or a specific toll facility and claim you owe outstanding toll charges. VDOT says these may be false messages.

    They encourage people to be alert and if you receive a text message like this, you can verify whether it’s legitimate by contacting Customer Service, h e re .

    If you believe you have been a victim of a smishing scam related to tolls due, you can file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center . Make sure to include the phone number of the text message that contacted you, as well as the web link listed within the text.
