ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — High pressure will keep Southwest and Central Virginia mostly dry through the middle of the week. However, increasing heat and humidity will impact the region.

Tuesday will start with morning temperatures in the mild 60s and lower 70s. Patchy fog is possible. Otherwise, mostly to partly sunny skies will be overhead with afternoon temperatures reaching the upper 80s and lower/middle 90s. Isolated showers and storms may pass through areas north of I-64 and the Piedmont.

Wednesday will be similar to Tuesday, but hotter. Expect a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the 90s. Heat index values near 100 may occur east of the Blue Ridge. Isolated showers and storms are possible.

A cold front will approach from the north on Thursday. Scattered showers and storms are possible during the afternoon and evening. A few storms may pack a punch, so stay weather-aware. Highs will range from the upper 80s to the lower/middle 90s.

There’s a daily chance for showers and storms from Friday through Sunday. Although all-day rain is not anticipated, you may want to keep the umbrella handy. Cloud cover may limit warming, so temperatures will be near average with highs in the 80s. Morning lows will be in the 60s.

There’s a disturbance over the Central Atlantic that has the potential to form into a tropical system over the next week. Due to slow development, there is a 20-percent chance for tropical formation through the next seven days.

September is typically considered the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.
