Pinpoint Weather: Hot and potentially stormy

ROANOKE, VA. ( WFXR ) – This afternoon and tomorrow will be hot with moderate to high risks of heat-related illnesses. Risks are greatest for those without sufficient cooling, the elderly, outdoor workers and athletes, and some who take medications making them more susceptible to heat.

A period of afternoon and evening showers and storms will begin Thursday with the possibility some storms could become strong to severe with damaging wind. Periods of heavy rainfall are also a threat.

There is some relief in sight from the heat. Temperatures will drop to around normal for the weekend and then below normal for next week. It looks like below-normal temperatures will continue into the first week of September.

Rain chances will diminish this weekend but remain slightly above normal for next week.
