Standoff in Henry County ends safely, man charged with assault & battery of family

HENRY COUNTY, Va. ( WFXR ) – The Henry County Sheriff says a man has been charged after an early morning standoff that occurred in Bassett on October 16.

The sheriff said around 12:59 a.m. on Wednesday, a call was received regarding a “disturbance” on Morningside Drive. Deputies with Henry County, assisted by the Patrick County Sheriff’s office, responded to find resident 31-year-old Robert Forcier had allegedly assaulted a woman and man.

The woman suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention. The other man involved allegedly fled the scene before deputies arrived at the scene.

As deputies approached the home, Forcier allegedly armed himself with a knife and began making threats against officers and to harm himself. Forcier then allegedly barricaded himself inside the residence, initiating a stand-off.

The situation continued and law enforcement attempted to de-escalate the situation and contact Forcier, however, he allegedly refused to comply and instead began cutting his right arm and leg.

The Henry County SWAT Team and Crisis Negations Team were then called in to assist.

Several hours of attempted negotiations with Forcier and the Crisis Team took place. The sheriff said Forcier allegedly showed no signs of surrendering peacefully and to prevent further escalation, the SWAT Team deployed chemical munitions into the home.

Forcier then exited the camper and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment for his self-inflicted injuries and then released.

Jonathan Robert Forcier of Bassett has been arrested and charged with the following:

• Assault and Battery Against Family Member

He is currently being held in the Henry County Adult Detention Center without Bond.
