    Area briefs: Maymester midterm at UGA, end of school year in CCSD

    Today is a midterm day at UGA: it’s midterm and it’s also the last day for students to withdraw from the University of Georgia’s Maymester classes.

    The University of Georgia’s Plant Center holds its annual spring symposium today. It’s taking place at UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.

    Athens-Clarke County Commissioners meet for a budget review session, 5:30 this afternoon at the Government Building on Dougherty Street in Athens.

    School’s out for summer for students in the Clarke County School District: Wednesday was the last day of the school year. Graduation for seniors at Cedar Shoals High School is set for 9 o’clock this morning in the football stadium. Clarke Central graduation takes place tomorrow.

    The Oconee County School Board held another budget hearing Wednesday in Watkinsville: a third and final budget hearing is set for June 3. The Board is scheduled to vote on budget adoption a week later on June 10. Oconee County Schools’ new fiscal year that begins in July.

    The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says a Gillsville man is facing charges that include aggravated assault and battery: 40 year-old Juan Hernandez was booked into the Hall County jail after allegedly using a gun to steal a woman’s cell phone.

    The Sheriff’s Office in Covington says this week’s collision of a car and a Newton County School bus happened when the driver of the car suffered a medical emergency. Six students suffered minor injuries in the accident that happened near a middle school in Newton County.
