‘Machine gun-like shots:’ 2 shot, 1 fatally, on Chicago’s West Side

CHICAGO — A 19-year-old man was killed and another man critically injured after they were shot multiple times Thursday morning on the city’s West Side.

Witnesses to the 10:20 a.m. shooting on the 1100 block of North Lawndale Avenue, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, said they heard at least 25 rounds that sounded like they came from a machine gun. Heron Enriquez said he and his wife were driving in the area when their van was hit, with a bullet entering one side of their vehicle and exiting the other.

Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th Ward) said the shooting was connected to an open-air cannabis market on the block that he’s been fighting against for some time.

“We’ve got to get a handle on it. I’ve been raising the alarm for over a year. Today was a culmination of what we’ve been talking about,” he said.

Villegas criticized Mayor Brandon Johnson, arguing the administration is “all talk and no action.”

“The reality is that we need his administration to step up, put forward a plan, put a plan together because the community is not safe,” he said. “Today it was two folks that are in gangs and drug dealing that were shot. Next time it could be a community member that is an innocent bystander.”

Police said the men were standing outside when three unknown armed men approached them and opened fire. Both victims were shot multiple times and transported to Stroger Hospital. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead. The 40-year-old was listed in critical condition.

According to police, the shooters drove off in a white Dodge Durango.
