Former Ald. Muñoz sent back to prison after May DUI arrest

CHICAGO — A judge on Thursday ordered a former longtime alderman back to prison for violating the terms of his supervised release.

US District Judge John Kness ordered Ricardo Muñoz to serve another seven months behind bars following his May crash and arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence .

At the time of the crash, Muñoz was on supervised release following his prison time on a fraud conviction . The terms of his supervised release required he stay out of trouble with the law and refrain from any use of alcohol.

According to a police report on the May 23 crash, witnesses said Muñoz’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and “slow rolled” into another vehicle in west suburban Berwyn. He was unresponsive and slumped at the steering wheel when first responders arrived, and a responding officer found a half-empty bottle of Captain Morgan rum on the passenger front seat.

Muñoz was appointed 22nd Ward alderman in 1993 by former Mayor Richard M. Daley. He served until 2019.
