    Illinois finished Top 5 among states in medal count after 2024 Paris Games

    With the 2024 Paris Games officially in the books, medal counts have been certified, and Illinois finished as one of the most decorated states in the country when it came to total medal count.

    According to data compiled by The Sports Geek from official Olympic Games records, Illinois finished the Paris Games tied for fourth in total medal count with New York at 17 medals, but the Empire State surpassed the Land of Lincoln in gold medals, 8-5.

    California finished first overall with 47 medals, 15 of which were gold. After California, Florida finished second with 22 total medals and nine golds, while Texas finished third with 20 total medals and five golds.

    Illinois’ five gold medalists came in the sports of basketball, soccer and swimming.

    Anthony Davis (Chicago) and Jewell Lloyd (Lincolnwood) took home gold medals for the US Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, while Korbin Albert (Grayslake) and Casey Krueger (Naperville) took home gold as members of the US Women’s Soccer Team.

    Ryan Held (Springfield), a swimmer for Team USA, captured gold as an alternate for the US Men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay team.

    All-time, Illinois has earned the fourth-most gold medals among US states (40), trailing only Ohio (44), New York (70) and California (127). Texas rounds out the all-time gold medal count top five with 34.
