CHICAGO — An investigation by Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is underway after an officer fired his gun while trying to nab a suspect on the city’s South Side Friday afternoon.

Chicago police said the incident happened in the 1700 block of West 47th Street, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Just after 5:30 p.m., authorities said officers tried to pull over a vehicle wanted in connection with a homicide in the 1700 block of West 47th Street. While officers tried to stop the suspect, one of the officers fired his gun, hitting the vehicle which eventually came to a stop.

The suspect then got out and ran before being taken into custody. The officer, meanwhile, was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and observation, according to investigators.

No one was hit by the gunfire.

COPA’s investigation remains ongoing, while CPD said it is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Police added the officer involved will be put on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.
