CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. — A person was found dead inside a vehicle that was on fire in a Crystal Lake Walmart parking lot, according to the Crystal Lake Police Department.

The department says Crystal Lake police and fire personnel responded to a report of a vehicle engulfed in flames just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot at 1205 South Route 31. That’s the address of the Walmart Supercenter in Crystal Lake.

According to police, several witnesses reported the vehicle was occupied and that they had attempted to help get the person out of the car. However, police say, those attempts failed due to the fire’s intensity.

Police say after the fire was extinguished, the person was located in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, the Crystal Lake Police Department and the Crystal Lake Fire Department.
