CHICAGO — A pastor from Chicago’s South Side with a reputation for speaking out against gun violence on Monday spoke through heartbreak after learning his godson was among six people gunned down in weekend violence.

Christion Tucker, 21, was killed Saturday on the 7200 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, in the city’s Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

“I know Christion was in the neighborhood. It’s a diverse neighborhood. He was in his car apparently looking down at his phone and someone came up and shot him 12 times. What we don’t know is why,” said Pastor Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Church.

Brooks said his godson was easy going, was deeply loved and had a bright future ahead.

“We know Christion wasn’t in a gang. There’s no gang affiliations. He was not a bad kid. This is a really good kid who for whatever reason somebody decided to take his life,” Brooks said. “I’m really heartbroken but at the same time it motivated me to continue to fight and that’s the reason we are building the center across the street so we can impact the lives of a lot of young people.”

Chicago police data indicates the recent weekend was a violent one in the city. A total of 35 people were shot between Friday evening and Monday morning. Six people, Tucker among them, were killed.

Brooks said he and his family are in the process of arranging funeral services. They’ve offered a reward to find and convict Tucker’s killer.

“We have a $10,000 reward for anyone who gives us information or police information that leads to the arrest and conviction of this individual or individuals,” Brooks said. “We want to make sure the perpetrator is caught.”

Chicago police said their investigation continues. Anyone with information may submit anonymous tips via CPDtip.com .

In an email from his organization, Project HOOD , Brooks requested donations to the group in lieu of flowers. Those donating should enter the name ‘Chris’ when asked if the gift is to honor someone.

“Your donation will help us continue the critical work that is needed to prevent further tragedies like this one,” Brooks said.
