CHICAGO — Chicago police are investigating a fourth ATM theft in the city this week, this time in Avalon Park.

Surveillance video shared with WGN News showed what appeared to be a black GMC Denali pulling into the Citgo gas station in the 7600 block of S. Chicago Avenue just before 2 a.m. Thursday. The vehicle drove off-screen before returning in reverse. Three suspects quickly got out, pried open the door, and used a chain to pull out the gate and gain entry.

In less than a minute, they carry out the ATM, escaping with an unknown amount of cash.

The store owner, Ali, who did not wish to give his last name, told WGN News that the Citgo remains open for business despite the theft. Repairs are ongoing, and Ali estimates it will take him at least six months to regain the profit lost.

“Our profit is by the penny,” he said. “We’re barely making 15% on whatever we’re making inside here. Employees, light bills, insurance, property taxes, and all that.”

Ali’s shop is one of four businesses reportedly targeted for their ATMs this week on the city’s South Side.

On Tuesday, police responded to three thefts in the early morning hours between 3:50 and 5:20: first in the 6600 block of South Halsted, then in the 2000 block of W. 79th Street, and finally in the 4400 block of South Cottage Grove.

“No matter what kind of door you have, they will break into it, especially having these kinds of tools,” Ali said. “Then they get inside, they tied up the ATM and snatched the ATM. And they go about their business. They don’t go after anything but the ATM.”

Citgo management said they owned the ATM, which cost at least $4,500, not including its stocked money.

“It makes you just want to close up and go home,” Ali said. “That’s all I can say about it. It’s sad.”

Police say they will issue a community alert if they determine these cases to be connected. While police have announced no arrests, an investigation is ongoing.

I'm not a businessman. But if I owned a gas station, I would not have an ATM on the premises. That's called thinking outside the box!!!
