Woman writes apology letter, avoids felony conviction

MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. — A Schaumburg woman avoided a potential three-year prison sentence by writing an apology letter to police for trashing the Island Lake Police Department lobby.

Mary Larson, 35, was recorded in April by a surveillance camera as she tore a cork board and flyers from a wall and tossed them in the air.

She was sentenced to a year of court supervision, 50 hours of community service and 30 days in jail. She will avoid the jail time if she complies with the other conditions of her sentence.

A department spokesperson told the Daily Herald the incident appeared to be a mental health issue and they’re pleased she took the time to write the letter. The police chief told the Herald the letter was “very well written.”
