CHICAGO – A group of Chicago activists took their bikes out for a ride Saturday on the city’s West Side to spread the message of non-violence and hope to young people.

Saturday was a picture perfect day for a bike ride, or in this case, a bike ride with a mission.

The activists proudly wore their pink t-shirts with “Riding For Peace In Our Streets” displayed across the front. Saturday’s ride was organized by BUILD – short for Broader Urban Involvement and Leadership Development – a violence and youth development organization based in Chicago for over 50 years.

“It makes my heart rejoice to see everybody here having fun and let’s be positive role models in the community,” said one Chicago police officer escorting the group.

Escorted by CPD on a six-mile route through the West Side, the advocates had one goal – to draw attention, hoping a young person who sees them pass by will look into BUILD and their educational programs.

“The senseless violence and shootings, that should never be a norm,” said Martin Anguiano of BUILD.

Neighbors also showed up to show they care.

“Whether you’re Black, Brown, Asian, White, we can all come together collectively to promote peace in the City of Chicago,” said Edwina Hamilton of BUILD.

I've heard nothing soothes a violent, murdering thug like a good bike ride.
