CHICAGO — Loved ones of a woman who was fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle on the West Side last week are now speaking out and offering a reward in hopes of catching her killer.

Heartbroken friends and family members gathered outside Harmony Community Church in North Lawndale on Sunday as they mourned the loss of Monique King, a 58-year-old mother of three, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of two who was murdered just over a week ago.

“I don’t know how I’m going to get through this, because she was my best friend since I was two years old. That’s when I knew of her,” King’s brother Unseld Parks said.

King was sitting inside her car talking with her brother just after midnight on Saturday, in the 3900 block of West Ogden Avenue, when gunshots were fired from a nearby alley.

At least one of the bullets struck King in the neck. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

“My heart is heavy and I am asking whoever did this to my jewel, please turn yourself in. Right now I am hurting,” King’s mother Shirley Parks.

King’s loved ones described her as a woman of great faith, who had a smile for everyone and adored her Chicago sports teams.

“Just a happy-go-lucky person, always had a smile. I’m sure that she had some bad days, I was just never familiar with them because every time I saw her, she was smiling,” Reverend Ira Acree said.

Local Church leaders are now offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

“If anyone knows anything, were encouraging you to say something. Monique deserves this. She deserves it,” Reverend James Brooks said.
