SOUTH BARRINGTON, Ill. — Officers were investigating an early Monday morning home invasion in this suburb northwest of Chicago when residents from another nearby home said a man had broken into theirs.

The person suspected in both incidents was taken into custody after a standoff with police lasting about 2.5 hours, South Barrington Police Chief Michael Garrison said in a statement.

The events began unfolding at about 12:45 a.m., when residents on Revere Drive in the South Barrington Lakes subdivision reported waking up to find a man trying to climb through a laundry room window.

“When the resident was alerted, the resident went down, saw him half in the window, grabbed his shirt. The subject was able to pull back and get away from him. The resident kept his shirt. It came off,” Garrison told WGN.

Responding officers were investigating when at about 2:28 a.m. they reported hearing the sound of glass breaking and, a short time later, saw the residents from a nearby home on Lexington Road running out. Garrison said officers attempted to move in but the intruder said he had a gun and barricaded himself inside the home. He was later arrested.

While the man said he was armed during the standoff, police did not confirm if he actually had a weapon on him.

Garrison said the case is isolated and remains under investigation. His department will seek felony criminal charges against the accused intruder. He recommended that residents ensure their home security systems are operating correctly.
