NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. — A Northwest Indiana sheriff’s officer shot in the line of duty in Illinois earlier this month has died, according to an update from the Newton County (Ind.) Sheriff’s Office.

In a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said Corporal Brandon Schreiber, shot on Sept. 1 while pursuing a suspect across the Illinois border in Sheldon, would not survive his injuries.

In an update late Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s office said Schreiber had died.

“On behalf of the family of Corporal Schreiber, it is with great sadness we must provide this update,” the Tuesday Facebook post read. “Corporal Schreiber was shot in the line of duty on September 1, 2024.

“Despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed he will not survive his injuries.”

That post also noted Schreiber was an organ donor and “his sacrifice will present the opportunity for him to help many other people.”

Schreiber was a five-year veteran of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Illinois State Police, which led the investigation of the incident, preliminary reports showed that officers from the Iroquois County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage on the evening of Sept. 1.

After the pursuit crossed into Indiana, ISP said the Newton County Sheriff’s Office joined in.

The pursuit then came back into Illinois, according to ISP, and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. The suspect then exited his vehicle, and gunfire was exchanged.

During the exchange of gunfire, according to ISP, the suspect and a deputy from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were both struck. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as Schreiber.

The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Ill., was pronounced dead at the scene, ISP said. No hostage was located inside the vehicle.

Schreiber was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital, authorities said, and was then flown to the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana in critical condition.
