KANE COUNTY, Ill. — A recent increase in jury duty scams targeting residents in Kane County has prompted a warning from authorities.

On Tuesday, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office shared a post on Facebook warning residents about the recent uptick in scams and provided tips on how to avoid falling victim.

Deputies said during each incident, the scammers are using Kane County deputy names and telephone numbers to call citizens and tell them that they have missed jury duty. The scammers then inform the victim that they will be arrested unless they comply with specific instructions and provide money.

Deputies said officials from the sheriff’s office would never contact citizens over the phone and threaten them with arrest for missing jury duty when citizens have never been contacted through the court system. Deputies said they will also never ask the public for money to avoid legal trouble.

“Do not fall for this scam even if the scammers use real Kane County Deputy names and telephone numbers,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.

According to deputies, residents with questions about whether they missed jury duty or those who worry they never got a jury selection questionnaire can contact the Kane County Jury Commission at 630-232-3466.

The jury commission is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding federal and court holidays.

The commission is located at the Kane County Courthouse at 100 South 3rd Street, in suite 230.
