LOCKPORT, Ill. — A 61-year-old man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday morning in Lockport.

The crash, involving a van and motorcycle, happened just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of 9th Street and Canal Street.

According to police, as officers were in route to the scene, they were alerted that one of the vehicles, a 2001 Dodge Ram, had fled the scene.

Upon arrival, police found a 43-year-old man, who was the driver of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, laying in the roadway without a pulse.

Paramedics administered medical care and transported the man to Silver Cross Hospital. He remains hospitalized in intensive care.

1 killed, 1 critically injured in exchange of gunfire outside Jim’s Original in Little Italy, near UIC

A preliminary cause of the crash indicates the van was traveling south on Canal Street and pulled into the path of the motorcycle, who had the right of the way at the intersection.

Officers were able to locate the driver, 61-year-old James E. Lawler, and detained him.

Lawler has been charged with failure to yield at an intersection and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury.

His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 14 at the Will County Courthouse.
