KENDALL COUNTY, Ill. — An investigation is underway on Saturday after a multi-county chase in the western suburbs ended in a shooting that left the suspect dead.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, it all started just before 6:45 p.m. when deputies were called to the 3800 block of Pratt Court in Plano to assist local police with a report of a possible home invasion involving shots fired.

Plano police said officers later located a male victim, identified as 70-year-old Russell Novak, who had been shot several times inside a residence in the area. Officers attempted lifesaving efforts, but Novak died from his injuries.

A woman who lives just steps away told WGN News she saw a large police presence and heard blaring sirens. Other neighbors, who requested to remain off camera, said Novak was a kind and good person. They said they also heard talk that it was a family matter that resulted in Novak’s death, although authorities have not confirmed that yet.

After authorities who were responding to the scene spotted a car they believed was connected to the incident, a chase ensued and the suspect then allegedly led them to the intersection of US-34 and Eola Road in Aurora.

Once in Aurora, ISP troopers said the suspect engaged authorities in gunfire and was eventually shot during the shootout with law enforcement.

Troopers have confirmed that the suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to Rush Copley Hospital where they died as from their injuries.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Authorities added that there is currently no known specific threat to the community.

According to deputies, an investigation into the shooting is currently underway by Illinois State Police (ISP).

“ISP is investigating the Use of Force portion of this incident and there is no further information at this time, an ISP spokesperson said.

Anyone with information on the shooting or chase can send tips to ISP by email at ISP.CRIMETIPS@illinois.gov.
