Tony Durpetti, owner of popular River North steakhouse Gene & Georgetti, dies

CHICAGO — Tony Durpetti, the owner of the popular River North steakhouse Gene & Georgetti has died.

A spokesperson for the restaurant made the announcement in a Facebook post shared late Friday evening.

The post offered a heartfelt tribute to the longtime owner, who was described as passionate and dedicated.

“It is with profound sadness but so much love in our hearts, that we announce the passing of Tony Durpetti, beloved owner and guiding light of Gene & Georgetti,” the spokesperson said. “Tony’s passion for hospitality and dedication to our family’s legacy have been the heart and soul of our restaurant for decades. He carried on the tradition started by Gene and “Georgetti,” making Gene & Georgetti not just a place to dine but a place to feel at home.”

The post did not provide details on Durpetti’s cause of death.

Durpetti had owned the steakhouse for more than 30 years.

It was founded in 1941 by Gene Michelotti and his partner Alfredo Federighi.

In 1969, Gene’s daughter Marion married Durpetti and the two purchased the restaurant from Marion’s mother following Gene’s death in 1989.

“From his warmth with guests to his commitment to excellence, Tony’s influence will forever be a part of who we are. We thank him for his unwavering love and leadership and will continue to honor his legacy in everything we do,” the spokesperson said.

Durpetti is survived behind by his wife Marion, his daughter Michelle and son-in-law Collin.
