CHICAGO — One person is dead after an overnight shooting following a traffic accident in West Town, Chicago police say.

According to police, the victim was involved in a crash with the driver of a red vehicle that hit the victim’s car around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of North Magnolia Avenue. After the crash, police say a suspect in the red vehicle opened fire and took off from the scene.

Police say the victim, whose age is not yet clear, was shot in the right side of his chest while outside his vehicle and taken to an area hospital, where he was initially said to be in critical condition. Police later confirmed the victim died from his injuries.

Investigators were still at the scene hours later, working to piece together what happened. A stretch of North Avenue, from just before North Throop Street to North Kingsbury Street on the other side of the bridge, was reopened early Sunday morning after it had been closed while police were investigating.
