11 jurors chosen for Michael Madigan trial; 1 more, 6 alternates to go

CHICAGO — One juror selection remains for Michael Madigan’s corruption trial after three were appointed Friday, bringing the total to 11.

Six alternates must also be selected before the trial begins.

Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan arrived at the Dirksen federal building Friday morning for Day 3 of the process. Like in previous days, the 82-year-old sat in the courtroom listening and taking notes while potential jurors – who will ultimately decide his fate- were questioned.

Questions asked of potential jurors include their likes, interests and associations, as well as their understanding of lobbying and their feelings towards it.

The 11 jurors selected are three men and eight women.

Madigan’s close confidant, Michael McClain, is a co-defendant in the trial. He and others, known as the ComEd Four, were found guilty last year on charges related to a conspiracy to bribe Madigan.

The group continues their efforts to get their convictions thrown out.

Madigan, also known as the Velvet Hammer, is accused of racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, and attempted extortion in an alleged scheme involving ComEd. Madigan first took office in January 1983 and served 36 years—the longest speakership of anyone in any state in US history.

Day 4 of jury selection will convene on Tuesday because Monday is a federal holiday. The goal is to have the jury fully seated by Thursday so opening statements can begin on Monday, Oct. 21.
