CHICAGO — A 24-year-old man confirmed to be an off-duty correctional deputy for the Cook County Sheriff’s Department shot at an armed offender after being held up at gunpoint overnight in West Loop.

Charges dropped for Chicago police officer accused of slashing tires at Puerto Rican Fest

Chicago police say the 24-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 200 block of North Morgan Street at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday when a male exited a Ford SUV and demanded the victim’s property at gunpoint. The victim then took out his gun and fired several shots in the direction of the armed offender.

The victim was not injured, police say, and the offender fled on foot. The offender’s SUV, meanwhile, was riddled with bullet holes at the scene and eventually caught fire.

The news has some West Loop residents rattled.

“I’m very surprised the neighborhood is very safe in terms of violent crime,” West Loop resident Misse Daniel said. “On this street is a hotel, as well as two wedding venues, some restaurants, the headquarters of Google.”

“It’s troubling. I usually feel safe in this area. I walk here all the time with my dog,” another resident said.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the victim was an off-duty correctional officer and says CPD is handling the investigation.

Police say nobody is in custody, and Area Three detectives are investigating the incident.
