Vandals deface Chicago’s Lincoln statue with red paint and graffiti

CHICAGO — Vandals took red paint to a statue of Abraham Lincoln overnight.

The Abraham Lincoln statue of the nation’s 16th president is in the 1700 block of N. Stockton Drive in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Vandals defaced the monument by writing, ‘Lincoln was an executioner,’ among other things.

Someone vandalized the statue two years ago using similar language and the term ‘colonizer.’

Monday’s defacement occurred on Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s Day, as did the 2022 incident.

Chicago police said Area Three Detectives are investigating the incident. Police have not yet announced any arrests.

The Abraham Lincoln monument, also known as the ‘Standing Lincoln,’ was built in 1887.
