As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we highlight the contributions of Chicago’s growing Latino community.

Martin Cabrera leads the investment banking firm Cabrera Capital.

Cabrera has become an influential community leader for Latinos in Chicago, serving on eight non-profit boards and leading a program to promote financial literacy at a Chicago Public School.  The Little Village native is also helping develop a real estate venture that would redevelop a 32-acre site near Midway Airport into affordable housing and commercial space.

Cabrera says, “I think there are more Latinos that are getting involved but also being philanthropic.  It’s something that we are learning as a Latino community.  How do we give back and not just help our community but others as well.”

The Mexican-American father of five has a rich history in the U-S.  His grandfather was one of thousands of Mexicans repatriated to Mexico in the 1930’s during the Great Depression.   He is now helping raise dollars in Los Angeles to erect a statue in honor of the moment in American history.
