ELGIN, Ill. – Crews battled a large fire at an Elgin commercial building Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said crews were sent to the 1000 block of St. Charles Street in Elgin for reports of a large fire.

SkyCam9 was flying over the scene and observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

The fire was put out at around 2:30 p.m.

WGN News arrived shortly afterwards and determined the fire happened at Welch Brothers construction supply.

Elgin Fire Chief Robb Cagann told WGN News firefighters were able to contain the fire to one building on the property. Multiple people were also inside the building at the time the fire started. They called 911 when they heard explosions and saw thick black smoke.

“We were told that there’s a lot of flammable materials in there in five-gallon buckets for the concrete processes that they do, so there’s a lot of fuel in there. What exactly was the ignition source, we just don’t know,” Cagann said.

Officials said just about the entire Elgin Fire Department and nine neighboring agencies responded to the scene. Crews are currently working to put out flareups and hot spots.

No other information is available at this time.
