The mayors are from 11 countries on five continents, and the program is a year-long course on professional management. In August two senior officials with the city will begin the initiative that was established by Harvard’s Kennedy School, Harvard’s Business School, and Bloomberg Philanthropies .
BHLI is a first-of-its-kind program designed to help close the gap in public sector executive development.
The initiative helps mayors and senior leaders expand problem-solving capacities by giving them tools and expertise. The initiative has already provided training to more than 540 city leaders and 314 mayors in 33 countries on six continents since 2017.
The initiative also helps strengthen city halls and confront global challenges.
Mayor Arceneaux said he is honored to have been chosen to represent the City of Shreveport at the Bloomberg Harvard Leadership Initiative.
“I will have the opportunity to collaborate with and gain knowledge from mayors from across the world and bring that knowledge back to Shreveport to help make our community stronger.”
The initiative brings together Harvard faculty, staff, and students, plus other experts from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ network, to help mayors through intensive classroom, virtual, and field-based learnings. The initiative uses data and evidence, collaboration, and innovation to impact communities.
Michael R. Bloomberg is the founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg L.P. He was also the 108 th mayor of New York City.
He said the initiative is designed to help mayors become more effective managers, build strong teams, and learn from the successes of other cities.
“This diverse class of leaders come from 11 countries, and we’re looking forward to helping them deliver results for the millions of residents they serve,” said Bloomberg.
