MANDEVILLE, La. ( WGNO ) — A Slidell man accused of trespassing at a Mandeville home and attacking the homeowners has been arrested.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a call of a shooting at a home in the 1200 block of Dove Park Road around 9 a.m. on Monday, July 29.

At the scene, STPSO deputies found a man, identified by the STPSO as Careyunius Smith, who had been shot in his stomach. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

STPSO officials said an investigation revealed that Smith was allegedly trespassing on the property and was not known by the homeowners.

Investigators with the STPSO said one homeowner came into contact with Smith outside the house near the garage to try to find out why Smith was on their property. Smith allegedly began attacking the homeowner, who then called for the second homeowner.

The second homeowner reportedly came outside and asked Smith to stop and release the first homeowner.

According to the STPSO, “After refusing the homeowner’s pleas for Smith to stop the attack and release his hold of the first homeowner, the second homeowner retreated, armed himself with a firearm and returned to the location of the attack, again pleading with Smith to stop.”

Smith then let go of the first homeowner and then allegedly began charging at the second homeowner. The second homeowner then reportedly shot Smith and called 911.

STPSO officials said the investigation determined that the homeowner was acting in self-defense.

Smith faces charges of criminal trespassing, attempted simple kidnapping, simple battery and simple assault. STPSO officials said he will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility once he is released from medical care.
